SUMMARY:Food Systems and Pandemics: Lessons from Native Cities
DESCRIPTION:Like today\, pandemics were ravaging North American cities exactly 500 years ago. How did the Indigenous peoples of this continent perceive these diseases and what can we learn from the dense and urban societies of Indigenous North America? \n  \n[callaction button_text=”Click Here to Register” button_url=”https://zoom.us/webinar/register/9315903517669/WN_RuXYoFkSTqOsa4Hd0msgYA” background_color=”#0F4C81″ text_color=”#ffffff” button_background_color=”#32a1f0″ button_text_color=”#ffffff” rounded=”true”] \nRegister for our May 30 Zoom Webinar\nFood Systems and Pandemics: Lessons from Native Cities \n[/callaction] \n  \nJoin Seed the Commons on May 30 at 10AM PDT for a remarkable glimpse into Pre-Columbian North America: a place where—unlike the Old World—urban density did not rhyme with inequality or disease. What lessons can we glean as we plan our recovery from today’s pandemic? The answer begins with our food systems. \n  \n\n[panel title=”Support Seed the Commons with a Small Donation” background_color=”#0F4C81″ text_color=”#ffffff”][simpay id=”1835″] [simpay id=”1846″] [simpay id=”1774″][/panel]

SUMMARY:Toward a Veganic Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The planet is burning up. It is urgent to implement real solutions. \nChema Hernandez Gil\, Alisha Utter and Nassim Nobari will put out a call to heal the planet with a genuine agricultural revolution. They will speak about popular false solutions to climate like tech-fixes and grazing\, and about the why and how of transitioning to a veganic food system. \nThis panel is part of the 5th Soil Not Oil International Conference. \nTowards a Veganic Revolution: Agriculture as the Key to Social Equity and Sustainability\nMasonic Hall 3:40 PM – 5:10 PM \nChema Hernández Gil\, Board member and co-founder of Seed the Commons\nNassim Nobari\, Director and co-founder of Seed the Commons\nAlisha Utter\, Plant and Soil Science/Agroecology PhD Student; Veganic Farmer \nThe speakers: \nChema Hernández Gil is a union organizer and co-founder and board director at Seed the Commons\, a grassroots organization that works to create sustainable and just food systems that are independent of animal exploitation. Born in Mexico and raised in the southern United States\, he experienced firsthand how communities were impacted by immigration due to both historical and contemporary policies. Through Seed the Commons\, he has focused on diet\, agriculture and urban spaces within the context of decolonization and climate change. \nNassim Nobari is the co-founder and director of Seed the Commons\, a grassroots organization that advocates for a transition to vegan agroecology.  As a long time food activist and animal liberationist\, Nassim set out to counter the myth that sustainable farming requires animal exploitation. Through her programming\, Seed the Commons has been instrumental in popularizing veganic farming and growing the veganic movement in the United States. Seed the Commons created the resource center Veganic World and founded the People’s Harvest Forum\, the only conference on radical food politics to adopt an animal liberation ethic. By creating platforms for veganic farmers\, Nassim continuously works to normalize veganism and build awareness around the corporate takeover of food systems. In 2018\, Seed the Commons organized the farmer’s contingent of the Rise For Climate\, Jobs\, and Justice march – led entirely by veganic farmers. \nAlisha Utter co-stewards Arbor Farmstead\, a veganic fruit farm guided by agroecological principles on the Lake Champlain Islands in Vermont. In addition to farming\, she is a PhD student at the University of Vermont where she is a member of the Agroecology and Livelihoods Collaborative. The focus of her dissertation is on the practices/principles of veganic agriculture and the intersections with food sovereignty\, regenerative agriculture\, and agroecology. Alisha is especially interested in issues related to beginning farmers and climate change adaptation. She serves as a leadership member for the Vermont Young Farmers Coalition and the Vermont Vegetable and Berry Growers Association and as an appointee on the Vermont Working Lands Enterprise Board.

SUMMARY:Humane Hoax Online Summit
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to participate in the first annual Humane Hoax Online Summit! \n“Faced with growing cultural criticism of large-scale animal agriculture\, corporations\, manufacturers\, and consumers alike are turning towards so-called “humane” methods of animal farming and seeking out alternative labels on their animal products. These falsehoods and myths–the Humane Hoax–range from large farms with thousands of animals to your neighbor’s backyard\, yet exploitation and suffering are omnipresent in every method of husbandry. The Humane Hoax Online Summit brings together experts on a wide variety of topics in order to expose the Humane Hoax in all its forms.”  \n

SUMMARY:Veganic Bloc at RISE for Climate\, Jobs & Justice
DESCRIPTION:Join the Veganic For Climate contingent on Sep. 8 as we march alongside thousands of people for the largest climate march in history: RISE for Climate\, Jobs & Justice! \nAs global warming threatens us\, the good news is that we have practical solutions to reduce our carbon emissions and slow the pace of global warming for future generations. According to conservative estimates\, animal agriculture is responsible for 14.5% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and industrial agriculture on the whole is wreaking havoc on the planet. Unfortunately\, agriculture is mostly absent from conversations on climate change\, and when it is discussed\, the conversation is dominated by proponents of false solutions. It is urgent that we put agriculture on the table\, that we reject the false solutions of tech fixes and animal-based farming alike\, and that rebuild our food system based on agroecological plant-based farming. \nThe march will take place prior to the Global Climate Action Summit\, September 12th to 14th 2018\, which will be attended by thousands of people including elected leaders\, United Nations officials\, climate negotiators and business and non-profit leaders. Join us that week at different planned events to put veganics at the forefront. Read more: http://seedthecommons.org/summit/ \nFacebook event \nCHECK BACK SOON FOR MORE LOGISTICAL DETAILS

SUMMARY:Veganic Gardening Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is the 3rd workshop of our 2018 series. Each workshop can be taken as a stand-alone or as part of the series. We will speak about planning for winter\, cover cropping and overwintering crops. \nMatt Loisel\, long-time veganic gardener and founder of Lazy Millennial Farms\, teaches how to start and maintain a healthy garden and grow our own food organically\, without using the animal inputs commonly used in organics such as manure\, blood or bonemeal. Gardening without synthetic or animal fertilizers is the most resource-efficient\, sustainable and compassionate way to go about it and easy to boot. \nA $15 donation is suggested; nobody is turned away for lack of funds. \nLight vegan snacks are provided. Please bring a water bottle to reduce waste. \nPlease arrive by 1:50 so that the workshops can start promptly at 2pm. \nThese workshops take place in a garden with generous plum trees\, so expect that the bench you sit on will have some dried plum juice. We suggest you wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty and/or bring a newspaper to cover your seat. \n************************* \nGardening in the spaces that are available to us\, be it a small plot in a community garden\, a rooftop\, a balcony or a front yard\, is an important step in improving access to healthy foods\, beautifying and nurturing our environments\, and building community resiliency. Seed the Commons is delighted to support our community by offering gardening workshops three times a year. \n*************************

SUMMARY:Veganic Gardening Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Matt Loisel\, long-time veganic gardener and founder of Lazy Millennial Farms\, teaches how to start and maintain a healthy garden and grow our own food organically\, without using the animal inputs commonly used in organics such as manure\, blood or bonemeal. Gardening without synthetic or animal fertilizers is the most resource-efficient\, sustainable and compassionate way to go about it and easy to boot. \n************************ \nThis is the 2nd workshop of our 2018 series and will cover: \nUnderstanding fertility\n– how much to fertilize\, when and why \nWeeding\n– Proactive strategies\n– Edible weeds\n– Tools \nCoco Coir vs. Peat Moss\n– What’s the difference?\n– Which is vegan?\n– Which is sustainable? \nPlant reproduction\n– Harvest techniques\n– Increasing productivity \n************************* \nA $15 donation is suggested; nobody is turned away for lack of funds. \nEach workshop can be taken as a stand-alone or as part of the series.

SUMMARY:Berkeley Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:Berkeley Earth Day is a free and festive event with music\, vegan food and great speakers\, including the Mayor of Berkeley\, Jesse Arreguin. Berkeley Earth Day is also hosting the Wild and Scenic Film Festival this year (tickets are separate). \nSeed the Commons will be tabling all day\, drop by and talk to us about building the food movement\, veganic agriculture\, climate activism and more. \nNassim Nobari will speak at 3:40\, see her talk description below. \nOrganizing for a Climate-Friendly Food System in the Bay Area \nTo address the climate crisis\, it is urgent that humanity shift from conventional agriculture to methods of growing food that support biodiversity\, regenerate soils and use less resources. Unfortunately\, in promoting organic\, agroecological and regenerative agriculture\, the environmental movement has largely defaulted to animal-based models. As holistic grazing and grass-fed beef gain popularity\, they have cemented a false dichotomy between sustainable farming and veganism. Nassim will explore the cultural appeal of small-scale animal agriculture and its limits in addressing today’s environmental problems\, and she will share her experiences promoting plant-based agroecology. She will speak about how we can turn the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco this September into an opportunity to mobilize civil society and build a movement for a truly climate-friendly food system.

SUMMARY:Exploring Justice Along the Food Chain: A Vegetable Tamale Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A couple years ago for Cesar Chavez Day\, Seed the Commons developed a vegan tamale workshop that explores social justice along the food chain. Learning about food systems while nomming on delicious healthy tamales turned out to be a winning combo\, and we have since been invited to lead this workshop in partnership with various organizations. \nWe’re excited to go to LA next month and hold it at UCLA! It will be slightly modified as it will be a demo\, and not a workshop\, but it will still be informative and fun. If you’re in SoCal\, don’t miss it! \nFacebook event. \nThe event is free but RSVP is required.\nIt is co-sponsored by\nUCLA Food Studies\nUCLA Center for Mexican Studies\nUCLA Department of World Arts and Culture\nUCLA Mildred E. SUMMARY:Changing the World Through Food Systems: A Call for Radical Food Activism
DESCRIPTION:Seed the Commons director Nassim Nobari will speak of the importance of grassroots activism to reclaim our food systems from corporate control\, while offering a critique of the food movement’s celebration of animal husbandry and the increased popularity of grazing. These stem from a Eurocentric worldview that sees the absence of farm animals as an inherent lack\, and reproduce colonial dynamics. She invites us to view plant-based food systems as vibrant\, dynamic and wholly sufficient\, and will speak of the promotion of veganic farming as key for social justice and animal liberation. \nThis talk is free\, open to the public and followed by a reception–if you’re in SoCal\, let’s talk about changing the world! \nVenue: UCLA Glorya Kaufman Hall\, Glorya Kaufman Dance Theater (Room 208)
