SUMMARY:Conversation on Veganic Farming
DESCRIPTION:This is a special meeting of the Working Group on Veganic Farming that will be partially devoted to watching videos on veganic farming and furthering our education together. \nWe will meet in Oakland at the home of one of our members. Email us for the exact address or to coordinate carpooling. \n**************** \nThe Working Group on Veganic Farming is a group of farmers and activists who promote veganic farming and gardening as a basis of our food systems. \nReclaiming and defending space for gardening and small-scale farming is vital to creating just and sustainable food systems. Unfortunately\, the food movement has largely defaulted to farming models that depend on animal exploitation\, creating a sense that local sustainable food necessarily involves farming cows\, goats and other animals. Likewise\, organic production is widely dependant on animal fertilizers\, most of which are factory farm by-products. \nWhat can we do as activists and farmers to build better food systems without contributing to animal exploitation? How can we put veganic farming on the table and promote vegan agroecology as the basis of our food system? We discuss this and more at our meetings. \nIf you are interested in food sovereignty\, agroecology\, animal liberation\, or any related topic\, please come share your thoughts! Please also bring a vegan snack to share. \n

SUMMARY:Celebration of International Year of Pulses
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations declared 2016 the International Year of Pulses – with good reason! \nPulses\, or legumes\, are an important type of food and crop throughout the world. They provide protein\, fiber and other nutrients to our diets\, without the saturated fat and cholesterol that accompany animal-based protein. They are grown with a small fraction of the resources it takes to produce meat\, and because they fix nitrogen in the soil\, they can help avoid fertilizer use\, making them key to the sustainability of our food systems. \nLegumes are among the cheapest foods one can buy\, and yet they are far from boring. From falafel to ash reshteh to baked beans\, they are prepared in a variety of delicious ways in different cultures. And yet\, pulses are often overlooked and under-appreciated. Indeed\, as incomes rise\, people usually move from eating beans to eating meat. \nJoin Seed the Commons this year to celebrate International Year of Pulses! \nThis celebration will be a full afternoon during which we’ll explore: \n\n\nThe importance of legumes both from a nutritional and environmental standpoint\nThe role of legumes in various food cultures and how to creatively incorporate more into our diets\nThe reasons for our food choices – why is it that despite the benefits of eating legumes instead of meat\, meat continues to be so favored?\n\nAnd finally\, the crown of this amazing event is an Indian vegan cooking workshop led by Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff. \nWe suggest a donation of $20\, nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. \n\nSpace is limited\, RSVP required by email or at 415-501-0811. \nFacebook event page. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Feeding Children: Eurocentrism and the Homogenization of our Diets
DESCRIPTION:Talk at Modern Times Bookstore by Nassim Nobari\, who is currently in Chiapas\, Mexico to research the role of food aid in changing local food cultures. \n  \nFeeding Children: Eurocentrism and the Homogenization of our Diets \nFood programs\, policies and marketing often target children. Whether they are portrayed as the most vulnerable members of our society or the most influenceable of consumers\, the process of feeding children is often linked to a logic of profit and can be informed by an ethnocentric bias. Through the example of milk\, Nassim will speak about the programs and social dynamics by which Western dietary norms are spread\, redefining “normal” in many cultures.
