SUMMARY:Animal Liberation Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Animal Liberation Conference will take place in Berkeley and other locations in the Bay Area from May 23 to May 29. Don’t miss Nassim Nobari’s talk on May 25! \nThe Food Movement v. Animal Liberation \nAs the food movement becomes the anchor for society’s natural resistance to animal liberation\, it is urgent that vegans get involved as leaders so that our ethic becomes normative.

SUMMARY:Veganic Gardening Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Matt Loisel\, long-time veganic gardener and founder of Lazy Millennial Farms\, teaches how to start and maintain a healthy garden and grow our own food organically\, without using the animal inputs commonly used in organics such as manure\, blood or bonemeal. Gardening without synthetic or animal fertilizers is the most resource-efficient\, sustainable and compassionate way to go about it and easy to boot. \n************************ \nThis is the 2nd workshop of our 2018 series and will cover: \nUnderstanding fertility\n– how much to fertilize\, when and why \nWeeding\n– Proactive strategies\n– Edible weeds\n– Tools \nCoco Coir vs. Peat Moss\n– What’s the difference?\n– Which is vegan?\n– Which is sustainable? \nPlant reproduction\n– Harvest techniques\n– Increasing productivity \n************************* \nA $15 donation is suggested; nobody is turned away for lack of funds. \nEach workshop can be taken as a stand-alone or as part of the series. \nLight vegan snacks are provided. Please bring a water bottle to reduce waste. \nPlease arrive by 1:50 so that the workshops can start promptly at 2pm. \nThese workshops take place in a garden with generous plum trees\, so expect that the bench you sit on will have some dried plum juice. We suggest you wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty and/or bring a newspaper to cover your seat. \n************************* \nGardening in the spaces that are available to us\, be it a small plot in a community garden\, a rooftop\, a balcony or a front yard\, is an important step in improving access to healthy foods\, beautifying and nurturing our environments\, and building community resiliency. Seed the Commons is delighted to support our community by offering gardening workshops three times a year. \n*************************

SUMMARY:Berkeley Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:Berkeley Earth Day is a free and festive event with music\, vegan food and great speakers\, including the Mayor of Berkeley\, Jesse Arreguin. Berkeley Earth Day is also hosting the Wild and Scenic Film Festival this year (tickets are separate). \nSeed the Commons will be tabling all day\, drop by and talk to us about building the food movement\, veganic agriculture\, climate activism and more. \nNassim Nobari will speak at 3:40\, see her talk description below. \nOrganizing for a Climate-Friendly Food System in the Bay Area \nTo address the climate crisis\, it is urgent that humanity shift from conventional agriculture to methods of growing food that support biodiversity\, regenerate soils and use less resources. Unfortunately\, in promoting organic\, agroecological and regenerative agriculture\, the environmental movement has largely defaulted to animal-based models. As holistic grazing and grass-fed beef gain popularity\, they have cemented a false dichotomy between sustainable farming and veganism. Nassim will explore the cultural appeal of small-scale animal agriculture and its limits in addressing today’s environmental problems\, and she will share her experiences promoting plant-based agroecology. She will speak about how we can turn the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco this September into an opportunity to mobilize civil society and build a movement for a truly climate-friendly food system.

SUMMARY:Exploring Justice Along the Food Chain: A Vegetable Tamale Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A couple years ago for Cesar Chavez Day\, Seed the Commons developed a vegan tamale workshop that explores social justice along the food chain. Learning about food systems while nomming on delicious healthy tamales turned out to be a winning combo\, and we have since been invited to lead this workshop in partnership with various organizations. \nWe’re excited to go to LA next month and hold it at UCLA! It will be slightly modified as it will be a demo\, and not a workshop\, but it will still be informative and fun. If you’re in SoCal\, don’t miss it! \nFacebook event. \nThe event is free but RSVP is required.\nIt is co-sponsored by\nUCLA Food Studies\nUCLA Center for Mexican Studies\nUCLA Department of World Arts and Culture\nUCLA Mildred E. SUMMARY:Changing the World Through Food Systems: A Call for Radical Food Activism
DESCRIPTION:Seed the Commons director Nassim Nobari will speak of the importance of grassroots activism to reclaim our food systems from corporate control\, while offering a critique of the food movement’s celebration of animal husbandry and the increased popularity of grazing. These stem from a Eurocentric worldview that sees the absence of farm animals as an inherent lack\, and reproduce colonial dynamics. She invites us to view plant-based food systems as vibrant\, dynamic and wholly sufficient\, and will speak of the promotion of veganic farming as key for social justice and animal liberation. \nThis talk is free\, open to the public and followed by a reception–if you’re in SoCal\, let’s talk about changing the world! \nVenue: UCLA Glorya Kaufman Hall\, Glorya Kaufman Dance Theater (Room 208)

SUMMARY:World School Milk Day Counter-Celebration
DESCRIPTION:For the first time ever\, World School Milk Day will be met with a counter-celebration. Join us for a celebration of the abundance of wholesome foods that exists in nature and in various food cultures. World School Milk Day encourages children and their parents to think of milk as uniquely suited to fulfill children’s nutritional requirements\, thus devaluing the many healthy calcium-rich foods that are eaten around the world. In contrast\, ours will be a true celebration of health and abundance. \nOur Counter-Celebration will be a fun full-day event with speakers covering topics such as school meal policy\, the globalization of milk\, how to raise healthy children with plant-based foods\, and more. We’ll have games\, discussions\, and of course… food! \n****************** \nSPEAKERS \nPayal Bhandari\, Integrative Functional Medicine Physician\, named San Francisco Examiner’s Reader’s Choice 2016 Winner for Best Pediatrician \nKevine Boggess\, Director of Policy at Coleman Advocates \nTamaya Garcia\, vegan mom and Founder of Spanglish Vegan Kitchen \nChema Hernandez Gil\, Co-founder of Seed the Commons and Political Coordinator at SF Rising \nReina Montenegra\, vegan mom and owner of Nick’s Kitchen\, a Filipino restaurant that went vegan overnight \nCorey Rowland\, teacher at Berkeley Unified School District \nEliseangela Young\, Holistic Nutrition Practitioner\, vegan mom and founder of Pristine Health. \n******************* \nFOOD \nWe’ll share tasty dishes prepared with calcium-rich foods such as broccoli\, chia seed and tahini. We’ll also have fun with dairy alternatives\, so that people can learn about all the ways they can enjoy familiar foods without the milk.
